discuss?
Sorry for the previous information, it was all hearsay since the video was posted before actual information came out.
So, this occurred last night at around 5:30pm. The police got a call because the man shown in the video was "beating up" an Asian man. This is still not enough information, but the fact if he was or wasn't drunk is still at question.
-
I like that there are not one, but two, dudes filming this with a cell phone.
But what's the story behind this?
-
Fuck eh.
Where is this?
-
Sorry. A little background. This is a drunk (not for sure) student in our Social Science center. I'm at Western.
EDIT: they are the Campus police who have the same authority as the London Police. -
Are they real cops?
-
if they are anything like the ones at mac, they are peace officers. they don't carry guns, but they have all of the other police related rights.
-
I'm not sure what to think of the video, as it's appears he's resisting arrest the whole time.
However, I do know that I've met more complete douchebag, power-tripping cops in London than anywhere else.
-
Seems a little over the top. No matter how much someone resists, 5 guys should be able to restrain him.
EDIT: I count 5. Could be wrong.
-
How does it appear he is resisting?
Other than the fact that the police are yelling "stop resisting!" all I can make out is one big cop blob.
-
Yes i've counted 5. I understand he's drunk and resisting arrest.. but does that justify the baton and constant beating?
-
How does it take 5 cops to pull the guy's arms from underneath him? That's not even necessarily a condemnation, it just boogles the mind.
-
They are sworn in by their local police department. This is pretty fucked up though... no way anyone deserves that kind of treatment for anything. I would have kicked a few of these faux cops in the face if I were in his position.
-
They are most likely Special Constables (in which case, they aren't "faux cops" - and you'd be charged with assault of a peace officer). I'd be interested in hearing the whole story.
-
from their site: "Our Special Constables have the Police Officer powers necessary to deal with most issues found on campus."
i wouldn't be kicking these dudes in the face. they don't carry a gun, but they have full power to place you under arrest, charge you with a crime and issue provincial offense notices.
whatever the story is, you should try to get this video noticed by sending it (anonymously or whatever) to UWO senior staff as well as the manager/supervisor of the campus police (Mike Mics, Manager Campus Police Service - mmics@uwo.ca). let them deal with the facts presented by a by-stander.
-
I would defend myself if I were being assaulted by anyone. Dude is being kicked and punched which is not required to take someone down when you have 5 people vs. one. Its seriously obvious that these "special constables" are going beyond their limits of reasonable force.
-
agreed. however, when it comes to police, no amount of arguing or convincing is ever going to stop them from arresting you once they've made up their mind. so i say just go down quietly and fight it after all is said and done. in most cases, an arrest is really ceremonial so they can issue you a court date for the future or a fine for whatever crime you committed.
-
Dude should have been pepper sprayed way earlier.
Think about the situation as a whole for a second here.
If this person IS a student, the cops were most likely going to remove him from the premises, and give him a pub intox ticket/night in the tank. If he were cool about the whole thing probably just a ticket and removal from the property.I've been in the same situation before, drunken-im-better-then-a-bouncer/rent-a-cop judgement/strength ends up getting the best/worst of us some times.
-
this doesn't look excessive to me? it just looks like peace officers who kinda suck at restraining a guy.
i'll wait and see on this one.
-
Once I was walking down Yonge Street around midnight and there was this drunk and belligerent homeless guy who was throwing some sort of hissy fit. It took three or four full-grown men to restrain him until the cops came. I'm kind of with Jesse. It's hard to tell if they're really being overly brutal or they just suck at restraining this guy.
-
yea, i really don't see what the big deal is here. the dude gets punched a couple times, that's about it. that's really all the can conclude from that video.
JetpackJeff:I would defend myself if I were being assaulted by anyone. Dude is being kicked and punched which is not required to take someone down when you have 5 people vs. one. Its seriously obvious that these "special constables" are going beyond their limits of reasonable force.
is that so? how do you know the guy wasn't biting them underneath that pile? or continuing to try and punch or kick? you have no idea what the dude is doing under there. you see cops on him and assume that he must be lying there peacefully being arrested while the cops feed him knuckle sandwiches?
at most, this video shows that the cops were POSSIBLY over the line. we don't have video of what happened before and we don't have a shot of this dude underneath the pile so none of us can possibly know or make a fair assessment as to the appropriateness of the amount of force used. to say otherwise is supposition and nothing more.
-
I saw the exact video on CP24 i think
-
The cops should have used more knees. Fuck that guy.
-
hank hill:The cops should have used more knees. Fuck that guy.
Or a choke hold. I defy anyone to resist arrest when your trachea is being crushed by a dude's forearm.
-
mitchrclark:How does it appear he is resisting?

it appears he is resisting because they spend quite some time trying to get cuffs on him. do you think they handcuffed him, and then had more officers rush in to beat him?
he was starting fights with people and on drugs/drunk. i know someone who saw the whole thing. i was loling at all the idiots posting 'omg this is not acceptable, police brutality much?' on the youtube comments.they are going to use force if you are resisting, deal with it. the guy deserved it.

I've seen worse on "Cops"

A former police officer's view: http://lawiscool.com/2009/10/15/uwo-arrest-justified-arrest-or-abuse-of-power/
-
They could have pepper sprayed him if they thought it was necessary before another officer approached. If they attempted to restrain him without pepper spray and then he began to resists, the police are too close and could get cross-contaminated. Then you have people with batons who have been almost blinded by pepper spray.
A police officer (or peace officer) may very well be thinking "oh shit, there's no way I'm the one going to the hospital". You would think that four grown adults could restrain one person, but until you've tried to put handcuffs on a person who's fighting, you really don't have an appreciation for how hard it is. In fact, getting just one wrist cuffed without controlling the subject is worse than not cuffing. If the person has one loose cuff and are able to swing it, it becomes a weapon. I am aware of one instance where a guy got free from a cop who was arresting him and he ended up hooking the handcuff through the officer's cheek.
I'm not saying there are no bad cops out there who are going to go beyond the limits of reasonable force, but they are a small minority.
Also, this short video is taken out of context without the events leading up to it. For instance, if someone reaches for a cop's gun, the officer is then fighting for their life and is justified in using lethal force. A similar video to this might just show a police officer shooting someone without any back story.
-
It's already been established that they don't have guns.
