So I'm looking for something to do for my gf's birthday, and I'm kind of thinking we may go check this place out.
Does anyone have any experience with this place? We would be going on a Friday night if that makes a difference. Do they actually play rock music, or am I going to be listening to techno all night long? Also, would this be considered a substitute for The Kingdom in Burlington? Ideally that is what I am hoping for as there were many fun nights there.

He's not wrong, really. But I suspect Elly, and most of this board, is sort of biased.
It's a club, for starters. Not a bar. Pretty much every club has a lineup, is overcrowded, and is more expensive than your standard hole in the wall or pub. It just sorta comes with the territory. But, maybe you want a club, in which case it wouldn't be that bad a choice (although there are probably better options).
I don't really know anything about the current club scene in Toronto. You could try the Social? I hear it's got a slightly more indie vibe, but I'm sure people will hate on it also. I also had a pretty good time at the Drake downstairs a while back... I don't really have good suggestions, but take what the people on here say with a grain of salt.

I hate bars, too. So yeah, take my shit with a grain of salt, but Tattoo is especially awful.

Yea... I've been in there twice, both times reluctantly. There was a fair amount of Ed Hardy amongst the "dance floor".
I have no alternate suggestion though, sorry. I've been to other places, but cant recommend anything seeing as I usually don't pick the place, just show up, and am usually fairly wasted and don't really care.

I am really suprised Tattoo is still around. Elly's description is quite accurate.
The Social also really sucks. It is usually filled with obnoxious, vomiting children.
If you're going out downtown, don't limit yourself to one place. That's the good thing about downtown.
I've never been to this Kingdom so I have no point of reference but on a friday night there is a hundred bars, dance parties and clubs you can go to in any good neighborhood. It sounds like doing the Parkdale thing might be good for you. You can hit Stones Place and if you're itching to dance, go to wrong bar and hang out with a bunch of gay hipsters on ecstasy and their faghag best friends who are too drunk to stand up.
Upon consideration of all this, I'll be at home. -
if you go on saturday, clintons plays 50s/60s music and is tonnes of fun. also grace omally's (gracies) has a sweet cover band that plays most saturdays. they play pretty much everything.
ive been to tattoo a few times and its been alright. its the same stupid club crowd but in a venue that plays rock music. i think they try too hard to be edgy. dance cave is also a blast if you just want to get completely wrecked and go fuck around. this new place opened up called Parts and Labour on queen west too. its supposed to be torontos best new venue for live music. ive been wanting to check it out for a while now.

The kingdom was just a rock club in burlington that was pretty decent on fridays. As long as you stayed on the rock side you didnt really have to worry about running into bros and douche bags, people just genuinely had a fun time.
Others might not agree with me, but we always had a good time there.

Man, that sums it up Perfectly. I got stuck going back when it first opened, so maybe that put all those things into full-force. The line took forever, the crowd was packed with edhardypoppedcollarbros, and you could barely even move or get to the bar.

Tattoo Rock Parlour is the "best" club that "everyone" goes to as long as your not actually from Toronto. I don't mean that as a knock on you, but it really is the place that all the kids from the suburbs go for their big nights out in the city. Prepare for popped collars, expensive cover, expensive drinks, huge line-up outside, and waiting forever to get a drink. Not to mention inability to move around or talk comfortably with anyone.
Some Suggestions (For what your looking for):
- The Drake: I love it here. Upstairs is great for casual drinks and a little more low key chilling, downstairs is great for music and dancing.
- The Maddy: Easy to shit on and compare it to something like Tattoo, but the sheer amount of options make it almost impossible to have a bad time. Chill on (multiple) rooftop patios, have a pub like setting, dance to some great tunes, and all done in a cool complex that makes it seem like a house party. Your lady will love this place and it's probably your best/easiest choice.
- Wrongbar: I make the lame joke that it's always the 'wrong bar' to go to (get it? GET IT?), but it's not all that bad. A little far on the west end, but generally a decent time.
- Annex Wreckroom: Great venue, great times. Can be a big UofT student hangout, but it's fine (especially in the summer). Friday's you got $4 Jack & Jager shots, $3 drinks & $11 buckets plus soul, indie, rock and pop music.
The Toronto scene moves so fast and people are quick to change their opinion of "best place to go" to "it's such shit there". But, honestly, you really do have so many options, check out BlogTO for a ton of listings about the city and do a little exploration of your own.
Just don't go to Tattoo Rock Parlour. Please?

I'm not sure I get this. I just mean all the "douchebag this" and "hipster that" is so... juvenile. I think Travis did a pretty good job of summing up Tattoo without sounding like an elitist asshole, or a lunch-moneyless high-school dork. Some people like line ups. They're a reminder that the place they're going is really popular, and therefore really cool (not necessarily talking about the OP here). Is that stupid? Yeah, probably. But we've all "transcended" that, right? So we can act like grown-ups about it.
Second thing: got anything new in your Tickle Trunk, Mr. Dressup?
In my eyes, that's the difference between being childish and childlike...

I go to a sports bar in Montreal called Prime Time. It's such a piece of shit, and is full of french drunks.
I rarely go out anymore, and just sit on my stoop for hours on end.

these places are childish and are best suited to such reviews.
It's like the time I was preparing for my first trip to New York. I was 18 or so and posted on a message board a "what is there to do in NYC?" type thread. The most memorable response I got was "go to washington square park and hang out with the black guys in rollerblades." I found the comment mildly humourous but probably unhelpful. Tattoo, Social, Wrong bar is all going to be electro for the most part. Seven Five One might be a good option. Depending on what night it is, they play anything from 80s/90s hip hop to indie rock. They also have a room downstairs which plays a different kind of music. You won't see any Ed Hardy there, but you will see a lot of dirty hipsters.

I can't personally recommend any of these places (except the mod club, been there once...) but:
Maybe the Velvet Underground? Apparently Edge 102 goes live to air there every friday.
Or, if you save it til a Saturday you could go to the Mod Club. Their UK Underground night was actually pretty fun the one time I went. They played some electro, mixed with bands like Blur and Phoenix
And I hear mixed things about Dance Cave. Really young crowd, but they do a lot of indie/rock stuff.
