Ok, i guess it's time to post this..

I've been working on a skin on frame kayak for the last couple weeks. It's 16ft long, and about 23in wide. The bottom is relatively flat, for greater stability, and more carrying capacity for caming gear etc...

Mostly made from clear cedar with straight grain, and red oak ribs. They were bent by soaking them in water for 2 days and then using a propane heated metal tube to slowly bend the oak with heat. A leather strap was used to help bend the wood.. I tried a steam box before this method, but it didn't work as well. My guess is that it was because i was using kiln dried wood..

The ribs are attached to the gunwales with double wood pegs and polyurethane glue. Mostly all other joints are flexible lashings with artificial sinew. The frame will be finished with linseed oil, and then covered with canvas and polyurethane.

It's roughly based off traditional greenland kayaks and the alaskan baidarka. Flexible, strong, fast, silent, perfect for breaking through ocean surf. I didn't have any plans to go by, so i just sort of went at it and hoped for the best..

I'll post some more photos in the next couple days as i get it finished up...

Also, does anyone know where i can get a strong clear exterior grade polyurethane? Something industrial...used in roofing etc.. no home depot shit.

I'll probably have a built-in waterproof pipe holder in there somewhere when it's done...haha.

And oh nice suggestion, I'll check them out!

I helped my dad build a canoe a few years back, but that was kevlar, and altogether a bit of a different method of construction.

    Looks great though!

I'm not entirely sure of the science behind a bong, but if you could build-in a device that used the lake water as the chamber, I'd be truly impressed.

Ha! This was the second thought i had, after the original, hey i should build a kayak...

And yes, you can make it so that it uses the lake water, I've done the same thing in a hottub. And ya, it IS kind of gross to sit in a hottub of bong water... but what can i say, that's dedication.

and just for you kwiji, I'll have to make it.

how will the canvas hold up?
i've really been wanting to build a canoe (with the eventual dream of building a little wood sailboat) but this looks way sweeter than a canoe.

i'm just wondering about the seating and how rigid the cavas/glue will be. i guess you'll mount a seat of sorts to the frame? but what happens when getting out if you put your weight down onto a canvas section

Wow looks awesome man! I've been looking into installing a waterproof bulkhead in my kayak and thought that was gonna be a challenge haha!

Where do you plan on using this when its done? not to much sea kayaking around these parts.

I eventually want to make a small wooden sailboat as well! But check THIS out! Gives you an idea of how versatile skin on frame construction is. I like the idea of cartopping a full on sailboat!

I also may make an outrigger for this kayak, and then i could attach a small sail.

I put in a wooden seat today, and will proably end up covering it in padded material, maybe fake leather, so it looks cool. There are oak strips on the top deck now as well, that you can sit on when getting in and out.

The skin should hold up pretty well, canvas has a relatively long history of use in skin on frame construction. The main part is the coating. I may opt for a more traditional wax and oil coating, as that seems like it would stay the most flexible. A really stiff coating wouldn't work as well..

And J.D. - No idea, ha, most likely around lake ontario first. Then maybe into some small lakes around here... I see some cool ones on google maps...

I've actually never been kayaking, kind of funny.

Any places that you would suggest?!

I don't know if you've camped at Bon Echo but I like kayaking there, they have a pretty decent canoe/kayak route although you may run into some slow family canoers..

Come up to my cottage and kayak. We have a crazy system of rivers that even I haven't gotten the chance to legitimately explore. I'd be worried about that gorgeous thing getting scraped on rocks though...

I haven't done a ton of kayaking around here this year, I was living up in north bay when i got my kayak and did alot when I was up there in the Mattawa river and Algonquin area. As for here I've been mostly checking out places in the Niagara region (I work there every day) and mostly do small river stuff. Jordan Bay is just off the 403 and connects to lake ontario wich wouldn't be bad at all. Around here all i can think of is lake ontario, cootes paradise and I've never been but i hear lake guelph is pretty good too.

Also are you gonna put a rudder on that guy? will definitely help ya turn with a big 16 footer like that. I only have a 10 footer but it turns on a dime and is sweet for smaller rivers / streams.
